What’s cellulite and how to treat it at home?
Did you know that over 80 to 90% of women and 10% of men have cellulite? Cellulite is so normal and no woman should feel ashamed or embarrassed to have them. It’s nothing to be worried about as it’s simply a cosmetic condition and not a medical issue. Women of different sizes and shapes can have them.
They start appearing after puberty. Although many people view it as a sign of imperfection, it is still a normal condition and it does not define the beauty of the person having it. Never second guess yourself. Always love your body and embrace it. Trust yourself!
So, Before we talk about how to get rid of cellulite, let’s learn first what is cellulite and what causes them.
Cellulite or orange-peel skin as it’s referred to sometimes. are the tiny dimples that appear on the skin. This skin condition is caused by the increased fat cells beneath the skin due to poor blood circulation and lack of oxygen distribution to the blood vessels in that area. Fat cells become larger and they become distributed unevenly causing the skin to look bumpy. Usually, the buttocks or thighs get more cellulite than the rest of the body.
There are many reasons that contribute to their appearance:
- Genetics:
You probably have cellulite because your mom has it already. It’s passed on genetically and there’s nothing you can do to prevent it but there are several things you can do at home to reduce their appearance and have them less noticeable.
- Lifestyle
Your skin is the biggest organ in your body and it says a lot about your diet. How you eat and what you do on a daily basis incredibly affect your skin.
- Sex
Women tend to have more cellulite than men. 80-90% of women have cellulite whereas only 10% of men have them. That’s because women tend to have more hormonal changes.
- Hormones
As women approach menopause, estrogen levels start to decrease. And because estrogen has a huge impact on the blood vessels, your skin starts to receive less blood circulation, thus, less oxygen flow. And because cells need enough oxygen to thrive, the lack of estrogen levels makes it hard for cells to receive the right amount of oxygen. That’s why more fat cells will accumulate in those areas leaving the skin to look lumpy.
But don’t worry, you can fix this by changing a few things in your life to make that lumpy-bumpy skin smoother.
So, Let’s dig in.

Drink water frequently
First things first. YOU need to make sure you are having enough water.
As we all know. Water is the key factor to treat all health issues. Lack of water can cause so many problems in your body. You can start implementing water drinking as a healthy habit, start every morning by drinking a glass of warm water on an empty stomach. This will help flush all the toxins and will help freshen you up.
You’ll start noticing a good change in your digestive system and it will help glow your skin and make you look younger. Another way is to always start your day by filling these 2 litres of gym bottles with water and making sure you drink them throughout the day. This will help you stay hydrated and it will help you control your water intake. Water also helps lymphatic flow and blood circulation which will eventually decrease the appearance of cellulite.
Walking and exercise
If you are someone who is not into fitness and don’t find any motivation in doing workouts at home. Try starting with a 15-30 minutes walk every day and work your way through the gym or find a group of friends and start some yoga or some simple workouts that you can find on youtube. Exercising and walking will help lighten up your mood and help your blood circulation and proper distribution of blood and oxygen through your muscles. This will definitely fight cellulite and make your body and skin look healthier and toned.
Coffee scrub
I love this one so much!
Coffee has so many benefits to the skin. The caffeine in the coffee stimulates blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels. And scrubbing your skin will remove dead cells which will make your skin as soft as a baby’s bum. Trust me, coffee scrub is so magical and along with other things I’m mentioning in this article, they will all help you reduce the appearance of cellulite and they will make you look and feel glowy and healthy.
– Mix one cup of coffee grounds with one lemon juice
– hop onto the shower or bath and soak your body in warm water until your skin cells get loosened and your pores are open.
– apply the scrub gently in a circular motion for 2 to 3 minutes on each area.
– wash with warm water and moisturize after you’re done showering to protect your skin from drying out.
– repeat this scrub once every week and you’ll start noticing a difference after the first few weeks.
Dry brushing

Along with the coffee scrub, comes the dry brushing. Dry brushing is a very good habit that will keep your skin always youthful. Whenever you’re about to have your regular shower. Take a minute to dry-brush your whole body. This will not only exfoliate but will help with blood circulation and visibly reduce cellulite. Bring that habit to your life ma’am!
loose clothing

If you’re someone who likes to wear tight leggings and tight underwear then this one is for you. Stop wearing this type of clothing right now! Tight leggings and underwear are some of the main reasons why you have cellulite. They limit blood flow and make your cellulite look worse. Try wearing loose clothes whenever you can and you’ll start noticing a huge difference in your skin.
sugar-free diet
I’m pretty sure you’ve heard about how bad sugar is for you a million times already right? I know, but let me tell you this. Sugar is actually the worst thing you can ever feed your body. Consuming sugar will reduce the amount of collagen in your body, causing premature ageing. this can make cellulite look worse. And fat actually feeds on sugar and cutting it will tremendously reduce the fat in your body and especially the fat in your buttocks and thighs area which is the reason why you have pimple skin.
Stay away from refined carbs
Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is always good for your body. And eliminating refined carbs will stop fat cells from growing more. therefore, this will reduce cellulite and help loosen the fat in your body. Refined carbs are found in white rice, white bread, pizza dough, breakfast cereals…etc
Opt out for wholemeal foods as they contain high amounts of fibre and protein. Try a plant-based balanced diet for a while and see how this goes for you.
Avoid Dairy products
Any type of cheese including cottage cheese has high amounts of sodium(salt) which causes the body to retain fluids and causes cellulite to be more apparent. If you ever fancy some cheese, just make sure to drink plenty of water afterwards to help flush all the salt in your body.
To sum up, cellulite can be treated easily at home, using home remedies and changing lifestyle and eating habits. It might take some time to see any results depending on the severity of your cellulite, but eventually, if you stick to healthy habits you’ll get there and finally see a result.
