How to remove rust stains from a knife

Knives can get rusty quickly if left wet for a long period of time. But why is it always the favourite knife that gets rusty in the first place? I don’t know either!
But don’t worry and don’t throw your beloved knife away, you can actually save your knife and get rid of rust so easily with one ingredient that it will not cost a penny and I’m sure you already have that ingredient in your kitchen.
Onion! Yes, you heard it. Onion has very powerful enzymes that can remove rust from any metal object. Just take the biggest onion that you have and plunge the knife into it. Leave it overnight and you should see the result then. Voila! A nice clean knife.
Another option for you is to use white vinegar. Simply submerge your knife into some white vinegar. Leave for a few hours or overnight and then wash and see the result.
Since we’re talking about removing rust why not also talk briefly talk about how to prevent the rusting in the first place?
- always keep your knife dry
- wash your knife immediately after using it because any moisture can cause the rusting
- keep away from the ventilated area, always keep your knives in a drawer or somewhere away from direct air.
Stop tearing up while chopping onions

Speaking of onions, we should always bring up tearing from cutting onions.
Why do we tear up? The onions are looking for a source of water and your eyes happened to be the closest source of water. Since that’s the case you can just place a cup full of water near your chopping board and you’ll be surprised that you’re not tearing up anymore. It’s crazy, right? I was surprised about this when I learned about it, as chopping onions is not a fun task. adding to it the torture of tearing up, just make it a nightmare. But not anymore!
Another tip that might be less convenient but I’m still going to mention it anyway. You can place your onion in the fridge for at least 15 minutes before cutting it. See the results for yourself and thank me later.
Remove buildups from the kettle
There’s nothing more annoying than making a cup of tea and then seeing a layer of scum floating on top. If you live in an area where the water is hard this can be a challenging problem. But don’t worry as there’s always a solution for every problem.
You’ll need:
- 1 part of salt
- 2 parts of vinegar (any type)
Pour the two ingredients into your kettle and watch the magic happens
The salt and vinegar will start making bubbles and they will both work on dissolving the buildup. Leave for a few hours and then rinse the kettle thoroughly with water to remove any residue. It works every time!
Remove stubborn burning from any pan

You can’t deny this, you have at least once burned a meal and you were left with a stubborn burn that just won’t come off. I did it multiple times. And I have had to get rid of so many pans because of how bad the burn was. But I no longer deal with that issue anymore because I’ve found the ideal solution.
- Pour half a cup of washing powder into the burned pan and add 2 cups of water.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Rinse and see the result in the sink.
Just magical!
Use bleach to remove mould
Different corners around the house can often get mouldy even if you clean regularly. Mould just finds its way somehow. Although there are a lot of products that claim they remove mould, they can be oftentimes pricey and don’t even do the job properly. Bleach has always been the answer for me. Stains? Bleach. Shower buildup? Bleach. MOLD? BLEACH!
It’s my magical solution. Plus, it was soo cheap. The cheapest cleaning product actually.
Just pour some bleach over the area that you want to treat and leave for few minutes. If the area is too mouldy, you should cover the bleach with some toilet paper or tissue to prevent the bleach from drying up and then let it soak in overnight. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
Just to note that you should always be careful when you handle bleach as it can be quite damaging
Unclog your sink with coffee grounds
Coffee grounds have several uses other than being served as a hot drink. When you finish making coffee, don’t throw the ground away, instead, rinse your coffee press directly into the sink. This will not only unclog the sink, but it’ll also leave a nice smell of coffee.

Keep your bread fresh for longer
Place a stick of celery inside the bread bag and this will allow the bread to absorb moisture from the celery preventing the bread from drying out and getting mouldy.
Prevent opened avocado from turning black

If you ever happened to open an avocado and you ended up just eating half of it, you’ve probably stored it in the fridge just to come back to it the next day to find that it has turned black. This is because you’ve been storing your avo the wrong way. The right way is to put your opened avocado in a container full of water and then refrigerate it. This will keep the avocado green and fresh.
Keep your ripen avocado for months
Speaking of avocado, you can also preserve ripen avocado for months by placing the unopened avocado in the freezer for up to 4 months.

If you ever happen to peel a potato and then regret peeling it for some reason like I do sometimes, then you should definitely submerge it in a container full of water (the same rule for avocado) and keep it in the fridge until you use it.
Prevent your homemade biscuits from drying out quickly
There are a lot of annoying things in this world, and dry biscuits are one of them.
As always I have got the solution because I like my biscuit moist. Just place a slice of bread in the biscuit container and this will keep your biscuits fresh and moist. The biscuit will simply absorb the moisture from the bread. As simple as that!
Endless green onions
Next time you buy your green onions, save the bottom with the roots and place them in a cup full of water. You’ll notice that the green onions are growing back again within a few days. Impressive right?
Prevent salt from clumping

Place a few grains of rice into your salt shaker. The rice will absorb any moisture that’s causing the salt to clump.
How to keep pulses fresh for longer
put a little bit of salt in a tiny muslin bag alongside some bay leaves, the salt will absorb moisture and the bay leaf will maintain the quality of pulses for a long time.
The most effective way to remove grease from the oven
put a little bit of dish liquid, 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of vinegar on the entire oven and leave it for ten minutes, then rub it well with a scourer and then wipe clean with a damp cloth. The results will impress you.
Sanitize your wooden spoons
Surprisingly, wooden utensils can accumulate so much bacteria over time, which can lead to unpleasant odours. That’s why you should sanitize them regularly. Just place all your wooden spoons in a large saucepan filled with water. Boil for ten minutes and then remove the spoons and rinse them.
How to clean nonstick pans without scratching them
Nonstick pans are great, they are convenient for making omelettes, crépes and anything that we basically don’t want to stick when we want to flip. But maintaining its non-stickiness can be a hassle. Especially, if one day, you ended up somehow with a burned meal that just won’t come away. Scratched nonstick pans can be harmful to your health.
If you ever notice that there’s a scratch on your pan, you need to replace it immediately. But we don’t want to be in that place right? That’s why I’m sharing this perfect method to clean any stubborn residues on your pan. Just pour some baking powder onto your pan and add some water. Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes. Rinse your pan thoroughly with water and dish soap to get rid of any residues left.
The best DIY solution for cleaning mirrors
Mirror, mirror. Why do you get dirty so quickly? It’s one of these things that you hate to clean but you have to anyway because who doesn’t look in the mirror every 15 minutes!
White vinegar has so many uses and one of them is cleaning surfaces effectively. Mix 1 part of white vinegar with 2 parts of water in a spray bottle and spray into your mirror and wipe with a clean and dry microfiber cloth.
Or one of the old methods to clean your mirrors that I remember my mother used to use is, wiping the mirrors with newspaper. The ink in the newspaper somehow makes the mirrors shiny and clean. Just spray the mirror first with the white vinegar solution first.
keep vegetables fresh for longer
To keep vegetables fresh for a longer period, remove them from their plastic packaging, wipe them with a kitchen paper towel and preserve them in the fridge. When you want to cook, go ahead and grab a veggie and only wash it then. Because washing them early on, will quickly destroy them due to the excessive moisture of the water.
Always separate potatoes from onions. The onions will make potatoes go bad so quickly. And always keep potatoes out of direct light. If you leave potatoes indirect light you’ll see that they’re turning green which is actually very poisonous and dangerous for your health.
To prevent herbs like parsley and coriander from spoiling too quickly, wrap them in some kitchen paper towel. Put them in an airtight container, this is enough to preserve them for a longer period

A kitchen is like a second home to every housekeeper. And having a good smelling home will make dwelling in it relaxing and enjoyable. That’s why you should always pay attention to the smallest details because these are the culprits of making your kitchen smell not so good.
Now, you can just go and buy an air freshener and get rid of the smell. But that’s just a temporary solution and it will just make your house smell even worse.
